THE RECREATIONAL WILDLIFE LICENCE

Taipan

If you are either just starting out or have not previously held a Recreational Wildlife Licence in Queensland and are unsure as to the Licencing requirements then I hope we can be of assistance as you commence your exciting and rewarding journey into pet, reptile ownership.

The requirements to owning a pet reptile in Queensland:-

  1. One recreational Wildlife Licence.
  2. One record book from the Environmental Protection Agency.
  3. Minimum age of the Licence holder:-
    • Must be over 13 years of age.
    • Must have a parent or guardian's approval for children between 13 and 18 years.
  4. No previous knowledge or experience required.
  5. No tests or appraisals required to gain the Licence.
THE FIRST SEVEN STEPS:
  1. Download a copy of the conditions and restrictions of the Recreational Wildlife Licence from the good people at
the Environmental Protection Agency at: http://www.epa.qld.gov.au/publications?id=1389
  2. Download a Recreational Wildlife Licence Application Form from the Environmental Protection Agency at:
    http://www.epa.qld.gov.au/publications?id=1021
  3. Download the Schedule of Fees from the EPA at: http://www.epa.qld.gov.au/publications?id=1645
On the 6th August 2006 the cost of the Application Fee was $54.05 and a mandatory Record Book was $5.90 making a total of $59.95.
(20 page book; $14.35 for 50 page book)
  4. Either post the Application Form with the money to the address printed in Item 10 of the Application Form or
in Brisbane, personally take the form to the Naturally Queensland Office, 160 Ann Street and pay over the counter.
  5. Drop by Everything Reptile to purchase some informative reading material while you wait approximately 5 to 10 working days for the Licence and Record Book to arrive.
  6. Having received your fresh new Recreational Wildlife Licence return to Everything Reptile to purchase the remainder of your requirements.
  7. Finally and very importantly, enjoy your new pet!

IF YOU WANT MORE DETAIL ON THE ABOVE SEVEN STEPS:

Step 1 above; downloading an 11 page document "Keeping wildlife privately in Queensland - Conditions and restrictions - Keeping and using controlled, commercial, recreational, restricted or international animals under a recreational wildlife licence".

Now that is quite a mouthful but do not be daunted.

Although it contains a large amount of information only a small part of it applies to the keeping of reptiles recreationally.

Having downloaded it take note of:-

  • Page 5. "A person who holds a Recreational Wildlife Licence must keep a record book. This record book can only be obtained from the Environmental Protection Agency."

  • Page 9.   Appendix 1.

This section refers to the fact that all common reptiles other than restricted reptiles are "recreational reptiles" and similarly, all common amphibians are "recreational amphibians".

Purely for your own interest you may wish to view the list of "restricted reptiles" which is on pages 10 and 11.

Note also on pages 8 and 9 the limited list of species that may be sold commercially; that is, the small list of reptiles that we at Everything Reptile may sell to you. Hopefully that will expand in the years to come.

Step 2 above; downloading a Recreational Wildlife Licence Application Form.

On that form you will notice:

  • Item 4: that a licence holder must be an adult while only children between 13 and 18 years are permitted to hold the licence and a parent or guardian is required to approve the application.
  • Item 5: "Agency Approved Record Book". Ensure to include with the fee to be paid the cost of a Record Book.

Step 3 above; downloading the Schedule of fees.

What is relevant to you is:-

  • the item toward the bottom of Page 1, "Recreational Wildlife Licence for animals: standard fee".
(On the 6th August, 2006 it was $54.05 for up to five years.)
  • the item on page 3: "Record books and record and return books". What you require is: "Record Book for other licences" and either a 20 or 50 page book. (On the 6th August, 2006 it was $5.90 for a 20 page book and $14.35 for the 50 page book.)

As a bit of additional information and although, at this stage it is not a requirement, it is often handy to have in your possession a "Movement Advice".

Three quarters of the way down page 2 you will note "permit and movement advice for moving wildlife".

To own a reptile you must complete one of these forms when purchasing / receiving / selling / giving away an animal; that is, when "moving" a reptile a "Movement Advice" must be completed by the two licence holders involved.

Admittedly this is usually produced by the 'seller' or 'giver', but for the sake of $2.70 (as of the 6th August, 2006) it's a good idea to have one ready to use.
